This t-shirt design made me laugh, it reminds me of a conversation that I find myself having quite often:
Friend/Acquaintance: I hear you have an indie music blog?
Me: Yeah, I do.
Friend/Acquaintance: Have you heard of (insert any random unknown band or artist)?
Me: No, I haven’t. Do you like them?
Friend/Acquaintance: You haven’t?! OMG! I can’t believe you blog about music and you’ve never heard of (insert aforementioned band or artist name)!
Me: Well, there’s a lot of good music out there.
Friend/Acquaintance: You should write about them, my sister’s boyfriend’s cable guy is in that band. I can’t believe you haven’t heard of them. They totally rock!
Here are my thoughts on that:
We don’t HAVE to like the same music.
Neither of us is cooler than the other because we have heard of a certain band.
La Célula Durmiente is an indie band from Spain (we love international music submissions). I also love bands that can play so many different styles- country, pop, emo, hardcore, tex-mex, circus- especially when they keep you coming back for more. It does make categorizing the band’s music a nightmare though!
Some quick facts about La Celula Durmiente:
Third album after “Perverso Universo” (Underhill/Arindelle, 2005) and “Eclectcinismo” (BCore/Underhill/Arindelle, 2007).
Joan Colomo also plays guitar and sings in The Unfinished Sympathy and in Zeidun, besides doing it solo. Inés enbodied provocation in Las Perras del Infierno and Narcís Prat is one of the best drummers we know, also fronting the mighty Moksha.
We’re a fun-loving indie-rock band from Lawrence, KS with members of Blood on the Wall, Bandit Teeth, and Boo and Boo Too. We like long walks on the beach and tacos.
Keaghan Towndsend recently gave us a little submission. This 17-yr old lo-fi musician plays guitar-centric tracks with a meandering sound I would expect to accompany me on an epic journey to find the zombie hand of Nick Drake.
His tracks are multi-layered often with a second guitar part, the more pop-tronic sounding synth xylophone or a harmonica. His lo-fi sound is surprisingly well matured and mixed for a self-recorded album. Check out his submission:
Hi there,
My name is Keaghan Townsend, and I’m a 17 year old, lo-fi musician. I play what most would call “indie/folk” music, with numerous comparisons to Iron & Wine, Nick Drake, Jose Gonzalez, Elliott Smith, Conor Oberst, Jack Johnson etc. I record everything solo, and typically play solo shows, but I am currently forming a backing band for a few upcoming local shows and a possible multi-state tour. This summer I will be releasing a full length concept album, “Sparrow/Oak,” that tells a story of an anthropomorphized tree, birds possessing humans, humans on par with dirty dogs, mother nature’s womb etc etc. I put a LOT of effort and thought into my lyrics and my music in general. Thus, I honestly think this album has the potential to be really, really good, and go somewhere and so I’m really trying to get the word out about it. I think that once you sit down and listen to my music, you’ll like it.
I’ve always been a sucker for concept albums and this kid’s got some potential. Check out his tracks after the bump: Read the rest of this entry »
Bon Iver is the definition of indie folk for me right now. The brainchild of Justin Vernon, Bon Iver, has a very relaxing, subdued tone that soothes the soul. No kidding, it’s like Vick’s VapoRub for the you inside of you. Have a look, have a listen to some of the best indie music out there.
Here are a couple of tracks from For Emma, Forever Ago. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, if you listen to “Skinny Love” with the one you love, magical things will happen- that’s a Shepizzle guarantee!
King Tut is a folkpsychtechrock duo based out of Asheville, North Carolina. Mark Boyd (Guitar), formed the band in the summer of 2006 with a different line-up, though Drew Veres (Drums) joined shortly afterward.
After writing a year’s worth of material on Mac laptops using Garageband and Reason, King Tut released their first album “Chopping Wood & Carrying Water” on a upstart label from Boston, Amaro Dolce.
When they play live, Mark uses a looping pedal, building whole songs from scratch on the fly, backed by Drew’s classically trained, powerful jazz drumming. King Tut has consistently been defined as new, fresh, original, uplifting, and exciting.
Alternative Press magazine mysteriously got their hands on a copy of their CD and gave it a 3/5 stars. They recently opened for The Liars on their Radiohead tour. And just a little while ago, they made it into the semi-finals of the BBC’s “Next Big Thing” contest, where they were 1 of 20 bands selected from 2000 entrants from 80 different countries. King Tut currently has plans for 3 new albums (one folk, one electronica, one live) to be released concurrently.
No, indie music is very much alive. I’m just in between ISP’s right now and I don’t have an internet connection at home. I’ll be on fiber optic lines soon, so beware- posts will be coming your way at the speed of light!
Another gem from the submissions page has landed in the form of some really nice relaxing music. Maybe it’s that summer is upon us and I’m really digging the evening air with the Wallscenery’s demo tracks wafting in with it. Their music is relaxed and chill. They kind of remind me of plus or minus.
Plus look at the fantastic job they did of submitting their band!
The wallscenery demos is a guitar driven project that dabbles in spaced-out soundtracks as well as indie folk pop. Formed by James Hicken (x the little pilgrims, x battery point), The 1st WSD record was released independently in march 2008. The record is self produced, designed, recorded, manufactured, and floats from beginning to end.
